What is the Northampton Equipment Co-op ?

The Northampton Equipment Co-op is dedicated to equitably sharing equipment and tools of all kinds. Rather than each person having to buy their own, we share equipment to reduce waste and make available more stuff than one person could afford.

Where is it located ?

The equipment is currently located in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. The exact address is only revealed to verified members. As we expand, I envision most of the equipment in a central location, with some individuals letting people use equipment from their homes, all integrated with a central inventory.

How do I join ?

To join, create an account and contact Alex Jarrett by e-mail or call 413-586-8591 to arrange a time to be shown how to use the equipment and the procedure for checking things in and out. At this point you'll be a verified member.

How much does it cost ?

Costs vary depending on the item. The only reason for charging at all is to save up money for the eventual replacement cost of the item, and for minor administrative expenses. We try to keep costs low. For example, the current cost for using the bike trailer is $1.00 per day (or fraction of a day). At present, there is no plan to buy new products using funds collected from equipment use. Instead, we'll rely on people wanting to donate equipment.

What's the procedure for checking things in and out ?

Currently a notebook by the equipment is used for scheduling. Reservations made over the web are checked against and entered into this notebook, and a confirmation e-mail is sent back. The goal is to eventually have a live online inventory once we have enough inventory to warrant it.

What kinds of equipment do you plan on having in the future ?

The first thing that comes to my mind is tools of all kinds. Power tools, hand tools, yard tools, lawnmowers, bicycles and bike trailers, electronic equipment. What do you think should be added to this list ? Write us.
